    Attention knife nerds!

There isn't anything stating this which is a shame, but this is a honyaki blade. Look it up, that's something special! I had to do some research to figure that out. It's a method used in sword making that uses clay applied thick over the spine and thin on the rest of the blade so that the spine cools slower in quenching. This leaves a harder blade and softer spine with a distinct line between called a hamon. It's a difficult process with a high failure rate so the price is usually much higher. The handle and saya are absolutely beautiful, the pin on mine is buffalo horn not ebony as stated so even better, and the fit and finish is very nice. It's a work of art! I was a little worried that this knife was all about looks but it isn't, it has a great feel and balance and cuts almost as well as my best japanese knives. The blade started developing a very colorfull patina right away also, with a big difference between the harder and softer areas.

The craftsmanship that goes into that process really shows in the blade, and it sounds like you're already seeing that beautiful patina. Even better that you got buffalo horn on the pin - that's a nice touch! Really appreciate the detailed review and for sharing your knowledge with the knife community!
