According to what I have briefly studied. The finer the grit on a whetstone the more the law of diminishing returns comes into play as far as sharpness goes. Also, I do not own any type of edge tester. I just know that after using this high grit stone, that my knife cut through paper easier than it ever has before. It just seemed so effortless. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I first ran my knife over the Shapton glass 4000 grit whetstone before moving on to this particular grit. And yes, in case you were wondering the Shapton glass 4000 grit whetstone is a unique and great stone in its own right.

I wouldn't call myself a veteran/expert sharpener by any means, but I do usually get consistently good results when it comes to using whetstones. What I do know however, is that I saw my knife go through that paper with such little resistance, that it was as if it was cutting through air. Therefore, I would disagree with anyone who says that this type of stone is a waste of money.

I really look forward to using my whetstones. Now, because of this product I enjoy using them even more, which I didn't think would be possible.
